The LT sedan with a manual gearbox is actually the best bargain of the group – it’s the least expensive version of LT and it comes standard with the turbo engine. This is an optional extra on any other sonic LT trim. Opt for the convenience package for larger day-to-day living. But for an automatically equipped Sonic, consider moving up to the premier. Adding the Turbo 1.4-liter to another LT trim brings the price into spitting distance of the premier, and the premier comes with the convenience package.

On flat, slightly sloping gradients, the 1.4-liter turbo was incredibly zippy. While we do not measure it ourselves, Chevrolet claims the engine can get the car to 60 miles per hour in about 8 seconds – a claim that our experience certainly supports. However, the turbo tended to lose power on moderate to steep climbs, requiring what we felt was an excessive amount of switching on the 6-speed manual to power through. Even with more athletic driving at average speeds of about 40 mph both in the city and on hilly canyon roads, we were able to squeeze 32 mpg from the 1.4-liter turbo with the manual transmission.
The Sonic’s gauge cluster is more traditional by replacing a conventional speedometer on the left side of a large analog speedometer that replaces the original auto’s bright blue digital display. An optional Advanced Driver Information Center collects everything from the current speed and direction to the average fuel economy and the distance to an easy-to-read package.
In combination, the Seats of support, excellent sonic, suspension of the Armrest driver standard-a rarity in the market of the sub-compact and telescopic steering wheel tilt adjustable for a rides of any small vehicle have led us. During the day, the seats mixed in the background and never caused any noticeable dead spots or discomfort.

There is plenty of head and leg freedom both front and rear, although elbow room is tight all around. The large door openings make it easy to get in and out. Unfortunately, cheap plastics are abundant and thick roof pillars reduce visibility. The Sonic is a temperamental little car with good steering and handling, especially with the RS package suspension. Unfortunately, the manual gearbox is a bit clunky, and the 1.4-liter turbo, while an improvement over the base engine, lacks responsiveness at low rpm.
The comfortable front seats are a highlight, with discreet reinforcement for temperamental driving and a comfortable driver’s seat armrest. Unfortunately, there are many tyre noises over rough surfaces, and the sporty RS suspension delivers a ride that limits on hard.

Standard on LS and LT models is a 138-PS 1.8-liter engine with a 5-speed manual transmission. There is a decent Environmental Protection Agency rating of 26 miles per gallon in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. Adding the optional 6-speed automatic transmission ensures more convenient driving in traffic and reduces the estimated city/highway mileage by an almost imperceptible 1 mpg.

Although the 1.8-liter standard engine is a solid performer in this size class, the Sonic’s Dark Horse is the optional 138-hp 1.4-liter turbo engine.
