The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado has twice earned the highest-rated truck award, and we named the current Truck the 2024 Truck of the Year in Car and Driver. What’s new in the significant update is a complete redesign for 2023, with new styling, upgraded powertrains, and a much nicer interior. Last year, the burly ZR2 Bison was brought and made the 11.3-inch digital instrument cluster standard.
What we love about the follow-up to the Truck of the Year winner carries high expectations, and we’re so excited about the third-generation Colorado that we’ve named it Truck of the Year 2024. Even after the first drive, we can appreciate the midsize pickup’s new turbocharged four-cylinder engine option, which is powerful and refined even while delivering 430 lb-ft of torque.
There was significant testing on twisty sections, as the truck corners with the poise of a much smaller and lighter vehicle. Even the low-level LT was comfortable and well-equipped, although we wanted a low-range transfer case. We experienced some quality issues in the initial build, but every Colorado has impressive off-road capabilities, especially once you make the switch.
In addition to the Trail Boss, 2025 Colorado Z71, and 2025 Colorado ZR2 variants, the Colorado ZR2 Bison came out on top in comparison testing with their closest rivals, the Jeep Gladiator Mojave X and Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro. The cabin quality is mostly good, although we would have liked a better-proportioned rear seat.
We were particularly impressed with the large infotainment screen and standard digital instrument cluster. However, the Chevrolet Colorado 2025 is a comfortable, capable, modern pickup that deserves our Best Truck award. Performance and Efficiency
Unlike the previous generation pickup, all examples of the Colorado 2025 use the same 2.7-liter turbocharged I-4 version and the same eight-speed automatic.
On most trims, RWD is standard, and 4WD is available at an additional cost. The entry-level WT and LT trims get a turbo-four that produces 237 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque. The trucks achieve 18-20/23-25 mpg (depending on whether you go RWD or 4WD). The rest get a version of the 2.7-liter I-4 that produces 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque, which Chevy calls TurboMax.

One Size Fits All
Full-size truck owners are familiar with the various cab sizes and tailgate length permutations. This is not always the case with mid-sized trucks, at least not with the current Colorado. It takes a one-size-fits-all approach (as the GMC Canyon and Jeep Gladiator do), offering only a 4-door crew cab and short bed configuration (61.7 inches).
If we shop for a mid-sized truck, this will make our job easier. In addition to the full four-door crew cab, some competitors also offer models with full front doors and two rear half doors. Although the short runway limits the load size, we found the various cargo-securing opportunities on the Colorado a great time-saver.
For example, eight fixed tie-down cleats, with nine more movable points, make it easy to tie down loads quickly. Another practical feature, the rear doors have an adjustable center position for carrying longer items.
In addition, there is a sleeping bag, plus optional storage in the rear door. A handy 120-volt power outlet is also available, and the standard Corner Step rear bumper provides easy access to the bed.

Every Colorado is powered by one of three 4-cylinder turbo engines. While we respect the utility and practicality of the base engine, as Colorado buyers, we were interested in the more powerful Turbo Plus, which is standard on the Trail Boss and 2025 Colorado Z71.
It’s worth the extra $1,500 required to add it to the lower two trims. Rear-wheel drive is standard on the two lower trims, with 4-wheel drive as an option. The top trim comes standard with 4-wheel drive. No matter the engine or the number of drive wheels, the 8-speed automatic transmission drives the engine’s production to the wheels.
The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado has a maximum payload capacity of 1,684 pounds with a segment-leading maximum towing limit of 7,700 pounds. In comparison, the Ford Ranger can tow up to 7,500 pounds.
Performance
2025 Chevrolet Colorado Traditional body-on-frame trucks like the Colorado have come a long way in driving and handling. The turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine is responsive when you press the gas and produces plenty of low-end torque, which is useful for city driving and towing. The transmission shifts smoothly and quickly, and the brakes provide enough stopping power for emergency braking and are easy to modulate for smooth stops.
The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado with 2025 Colorado Z71 trim remains fun and exciting to drive in the dirt. Buyers willing to give up a little comfort on the highway in favor of more capability off the beaten path will surely enjoy the Trail Boss and ZR2 versions.

Colorado’s most popular engine, a 2.7-liter Turbo Plus that produces 310 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque, is available on the WT and LT and standard on the Trail Boss and 2025 Chevy Colorado Z71. After driving it, we’d spend about $1,500 to upgrade the WT and LT in a heartbeat.
The ZR2 and ZR2 Bison models are powered by a 2.7-liter Turbo High Output turbo-4 engine. This also produces 310 horsepower. However, the Turbo HO produces 430 lb-ft of torque. The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado, with the base engine for the WT and LT, is a 237-horsepower 2.7-liter Turbo 4-cylinder.
The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado certainly can be a manageable load for the suspension to feel smooth and steady. The ride quality is comfortable and controllable. The steering is also a departure from the old truck script. We found the system pleasantly weighted, and there is no sense of blurriness with the front wheels when we are pointed straight ahead.
The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado offers five selectable driving modes: Normal, Tow/Haul, Off-Road (more for gravel and dirt roads), Terrain (for more serious rock crawling), and Baja special desert mode.
There are also different chassis setups for the 2025 Chevrolet Colorado model. The WT and LT base trucks provide 7.9 inches of ground clearance (less than the Subaru Outback). The off-road-equipped Z71 increases it to 8.9 inches, while the Trail Boss trim has 9.5 inches. As a tougher off-roader, the ZR2 raises it to 10.7 inches. At the top of the ground clearance derby is the off-road-competent ZR2 Bison, measuring 12.2 inches.

The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado has door pockets that are too small to be useful, and the compartment under the rear bench is nice but only offers a little storage (although it does offer a 60/40 split). However, the center console is deep, and a divider makes it a two-level space, which is nice. We also appreciate the small phone slot integrated into the cupholder.
The Colorado’s big impression is its towing and hauling ability. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 7,700 pounds, the heaviest load in its class. It also has an optional towing package that monitors your trailer’s mileage and can diagnose problems.
Its max payload reaches 1,685 pounds, near the top of the midsize truck class. It also offers a neat storage area in the rear door and a 240-volt household outlet in the bed to power smaller household appliances.

Buyers shopping for the 2025 Colorado have plenty of options. Trims include WT, LT, Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2; in our opinion, the Trail Boss seems like a good middle ground. The Z71 and ZR2 deserve a higher price, but the Trail Boss gives buyers a higher suspension, 32-inch all-terrain rubber, rear limited-slip differential, off-road mode, and recovery points with a base interior to keep costs low.
The Beastly ZR2 Bison AEV
Chevrolet offers many off-roader flavors with the Colorado 2025, but the ZR2 Bison is the spiciest. Buyers get front and rear Multimatic spool-valve dampers, five steel skidplates, 35-inch big tires, steel bumpers, and 12.2 inches of ground clearance. You can also get a bed-mounted spare tire carrier, and the front bumper is ready for your favorite winch. This thing can’t be stopped.
2025 Chevy Colorado EV
GM has recently revealed two impressive truck designs created by designer Ben Wilkins. The sketches exhibit a clear tribute to the 1973 launched 3rd generation Chevrolet C/K pick-up trucks. Furthermore, it also reminds me of the new 2023 Colorado.
I strongly believe that one of these sketches could be a potential design for the upcoming Colorado EV. It is an obvious choice for Chevrolet to create a smaller electric pick-up truck than the Silverado EV. And it’s almost certain to come into existence. Chevrolet has been naming their new EV models by simply adding “EV” to their classic model names such as the “Silverado EV”, “Blazer EV” or “Equinox EV”. Therefore, a “Colorado EV” model may be on the horizon.
Ford is already working on an electric Ranger truck, and it’s quite evident that GM is also working on a compact EV pick-up truck, as well as Toyota, albeit they may take longer to bring it to market.
Electric trucks have an advantage over traditional trucks. A new compact pick-up truck with design elements from the 1970s will probably be a hit in North America. A smaller, comfortable, and affordable pick-up truck based on Ultium technology could be GM’s next significant success.
New Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison
On the same day that the public will witness the unveiling of the 2025 Range Rover Sport SV, Chevrolet will also showcase their version of off-road performance, but with a more significant emphasis and potential for off-roading. The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison will make its debut on May 31, and Chevy has already given a glimpse of a prototype on Facebook, revealing a mid-sized truck that has substantially bulked up since it first launched a few years ago. The 2019 Colorado ZR2 Bison appeared to be a regular Colorado with a few minor parts added from Chevy Performance and American Expeditionary Vehicle (AEV) catalogs. It even had the same 31-inch tires as the ZR2 trim, which led to criticism after a challenging rocky trail drive, with reviewers stating that the Bison needed an extra inch or two of ground clearance instead of additional armor.
The upcoming 2025 Colorado ZR2 Bison will address these concerns by enhancing ground clearance and tire specifications. The ZR2’s Multimatic DSSV dampers already give the Truck a three-inch height advantage over a standard Colorado, and the ZR2 Bison is expected to add another two inches, with added protection from Chevrolet Performance hydraulic bump stops. Instead of the 33-inch Goodyear Territory Mud-Terrains used in the ZR2, the new ZR2 Bison will have 35-inch Goodyear DuraTrac All-Terrain tires mounted on beadlock-capable wheels. While earlier sightings indicated the presence of a spare tire mounted behind the cab, it is unclear from the current photos.
The ZR2’s signature double-bulge hood is expected to remain, along with a very similar front fascia, though the lower bumper will feature a new design with additional spotlights, space for a winch, and an integrated skid plate. The anticipated list of AEV upgrades includes additional boron steel underbody skid plating and a new steel rear bumper.
The camo on the hood suggests the possibility of additional venting. It is speculated that the ZR2 Bison will use the same engine as the rest of the range, a turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine capable of producing 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.

This ultimate off-road Colorado offers several upgrades to maximize any off-road experience. These include a taller suspension, larger wheels and tires, unique off-road dampers, and more. We’ve done some rock crawling on this bad boy, and it doesn’t hurt to be the pilot.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Cordless phone integration is one of the most amazing concepts. It’s nice not having to play around with cables. Wireless charging with an extra-large pad is also available.
Infotainment Touchscreen
The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado’s infotainment interface is one of the more user-friendly systems, and it gets even better with the standard 11.3-inch touchscreen. We found that operating it while driving was quite easy to master, thanks partly to the built-in Google and voice activation.

This available open option is suitable for a sturdy midsize pickup.
Turbo Plus Engine
A 310-horsepower 2.7-liter Turbo Plus engine is optional in the lower two trims of the Colorado lineup. Feeling livelier than the base engine, it only adds about $1,500 in profit. We highly recommend the upgrade.
HD Surround Vision
As part of the optional technology package, this feature gives the driver a view of the truck, so backing into tight parking spaces is child’s play.
The Colorado’s technology is impressive, especially at the lower end of the walk trim. Every variant has an 11.3-inch touchscreen and an 11.0-inch digital instrument cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto plus Google integration are also included in all models. Chevy also offers extensive cameras around the vehicle, including a 360-degree view and underbody camera for the Z71 and ZR2.
2025 Chevy Colorado MPG
Depending on the configuration, the EPA estimates that Colorado will get between 16 and 22 mpg in combined city/highway driving. In testing the 2025 Chevrolet Colorado Z71, which has 4WD and an estimated 20 mpg, Colorado just topped the EPA’s combined estimate on our real-world evaluation route, returning 21.5 mpg. That’s on par with other trucks in this class, and if you’re in the new Colorado, you should be able to hit the EPA numbers reliably.
The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado gets fuel economy down to about 17/21 mpg (or as low as 16/16 mpg in the ZR2), which has been tested with 0-60 mph acceleration that takes 6.0-6.9 seconds depending on the trim).

Every Colorado comes standard with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and automatic distance lights. However, more advanced driver aids, such as blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control, are available in different option packages for all trims.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave Colorado an overall score of four out of five stars in its series of safety tests. The GMC Canyon and Nissan Frontier earned the same score, while the Honda Ridgeline earned the top 5-star rating.
