2022 Chevy Silverado ZRX Full-performance off-road trucks have gotten hot lately and this is attracting the interest of truck manufacturers and after-sales companies.
There is only one significant production truck – the Ford F-150 Raptor – in this niche to date, but Ram is joining the competition with the Ram 1500 TRX 2022. We know Ram is working on the Raptor-killer even since the TRX concept was launched in 2016, but there is also news about Chevy working on products to deal with both.
Here comes today’s exclusive detail on General Motors’ upcoming full-size off-road truck, the Silverado ZR2. Most importantly, the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 won’t be the TRX Ram hunter or Ford F-150 Raptor that GM fans want, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth getting excited about.
Chevrolet has proven they can make the leading off-road pickup truck in its class with the Colorado ZR2, and the brand aims to enlarge that recipe.
Here are the details. For starters, the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 will feature better off-road suspension, and next-generation DSSV Multimatic dampers – slightly different from what we’re seeing today.
The full-size truck will also feature rear and front electronic locking differences, as well as better approach and departure angles thanks to a unique rear and front bumper design.
2022 Chevy Silverado ZRX News
Speaking of the TRX Ram, don’t expect the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 2023 to follow suit on wide-open dunes. The horsepower difference will be a few hundred, as the ZR2 won’t offer any engine upgrades from what’s currently seen with the 5.3L L84 and 6.2L L87 V8 engines.
In a sense, this seems a bit odd, as most enthusiasts in the half-ton truck market seem to be attracted to the kind of Baja truck that is open and fun off the highway. And on the road, they don’t have enough horsepower. Just ask Ram why they put Hellcat on TRX in the first place.
GM has a supercharged Silverado in the proposal, which will be more in line with the market (as in demand, sales, profit, growth, customer satisfaction), but we are not sure how this big truck fits the “All-Electric Future ™”.

Compared to recent reports that have come out about what powers the next-generation Ford F-150 Raptor, as well as reports that Ram will eventually offer a non-supercharged version of the TRX, the Silverado ZR2 could match both of these trucks.
It’s thought Ford will offer a PowerBoost Hybrid V6 system and a 10-speed automatic as the base powertrain on the Raptor, which can deliver around 500 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque, but truck fans will still say that’s missing. two cylinders.
2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 ZRX
A recent report indicates that General Motors is working on a more extreme off-road version of their new Chevy Silverado 1500 truck. A report from Muscle Cars & Trucks states that the new model will be called the Silverado ZRX and will be available as a 2022 model year.
General Motors has yet to provide a direct competitor to the Ford F-150 Raptor. Now, FCA is also working on the off-road monster Ram Rebel TRX, so GM may be forced to develop a full-size truck to rival the Raptor, TRX, and other off-road performance pickup trucks.
What does all this mean? What is the name ZRX about? GM has used previous ZRX badges for the 2003 special edition GMC Sonoma (Sonoma ZRX). The name ZRX could do well against TRX and the Raptor.
The report is also based on the fact that GM recently renewed the name ZRX with the US Trademark office.
Will the Silverado ZRX become a fire-breathing off-road trophy truck for the roads? No official information is available yet, but Chevrolet could use the heavier off-road spool valve DSSV shock for this truck. This is what they demonstrated for the Silverado ZH2 hydrogen fuel cell concept truck.
It may also use off-road shocks from Fox or other high-performance suspension manufacturers.
The report states that GM is unlikely to introduce a more powerful engine for the upcoming ZRX. The company can use the standard version of the 6.2-liter gas V8 or the 3.0-liter turbo-diesel I6. Companies may have to rethink this strategy. A big part of what makes the Ford Raptor special is its high output engine with 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. The Ram Rebel TRX is rumored to be delivering a Hellcat engine in the truck with up to 707 horsepower.
GM has several very powerful engines in their arsenal, so a more powerful version should be possible.
The current top off-road truck is the Silverado 1500 Trail Boss. Here it is on the tough Cliffhanger 2.0 trail.
2022 Chevy Silverado 2500
Since the GM Authority first reported earlier this year, GM is planning a significant refresh of its light-duty full-size pickups – the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra – for the 2022 model year.
The changes will involve refreshed exteriors and interiors, along with new rear doors and some other updates. Having brought you this spy photo from the GMC Sierra 2022, we are now showing you the first photos of the 2022 Chevy Silverado.
This updated truck prototype uses a large amount of camouflage covering the front fascia, hood, front fender, box, and entire rear, including the rear fenders, rear doors, and tail lights.
Upfront, it appears that the Chevy Silverado 2022 will get a new fascia that adopts the Bow Tie brand’s latest iteration of the two-tier lighting setup, as seen on models like the 2020 Silverado HD and newer and 2019 and later.
Jacket. The Camo makes it difficult to see exactly which direction the new pickup will go to, but the new design will feature thin LED accents and a daytime running light (DRL) at the top of the fascia, followed by the main light elements. mounted below.
The cab remains untouched, evidenced by the lack of camouflage on these Extended Cab models. Moving towards the rear, it looks like the Chevy Silverado 2022 will include an integrated BedStep adopted from GM’s 2020 model year Heavy Duty truck.
Meanwhile, the rear body is completely camouflaged. As we reported last week, General Motors will be offering the Silverado GMC MultiPro rear door under the name MultiFlex (or Multi-Flex). Additionally, the back door will carry the same QK2 RPO Code as the MultiPro as on the GMC Sierra.
2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 Specs
On numerous occasions, we have seen Silverado HD models with tailgate cutouts identical to those in the MultiPro tailgate. GM Authority sources also stated that Multi-Flex could feature improvements to MultiPro, either in functionality or by introducing the seventh position.
It’s worth noting that the camouflage around the box may hide the carbon composite bed offered on the Sierra as the GMC CarbonPro, although it’s currently unclear. Meanwhile, a new set of taillights will also be part of the mid-cycle update.
Meanwhile, the fully camouflaged interior is where the biggest changes will take place, as some criticize the fourth-generation Silverado 1500 – all-new for the 2019 model – for having a disappointing cockpit.
Testers quickly covered the dashboard as soon as they saw our spy lens. However, as GM Authority reported earlier this year, the Chevy Silverado 2022 and GMC Sierra will feature a revised center stack similar to the one on the all-new Chevy Tahoe 2022 and Suburban 2022.
All of these changes make it clear that GM is not messing around with updating one of its major products. In fact, the Silverado is GM’s best-selling vehicle in the United States and accounts for a significant portion of its revenue. And while the new Silverado is doing well in the market, it’s clear that Chevy wants to eliminate any potential criticism of the vehicle with this update.
We’ll have more information on the Chevy Silverado 2022 refresh very soon. In the meantime, be sure to subscribe to the GM Authority for Silverado news, Chevrolet news, and around-the-clock GM news coverage.
2022 Chevy Silverado 2500hd
The Chevrolet Silverado 2022 will feature a refresher on the Light Duty Silverado 1500 model, along with minor changes to the Heavy Duty Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD models and the Medium Duty Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD models.
The 2022 Silverado HD, comprising the Silverado 2500HD and Silverado 3500HD, is expected to see minor changes to the model year, including:
- New exterior color
- Slightly resetting equipment/features in trim levels
2022 Chevy Silverado 3500
It seems like yesterday we reviewed the all-new Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup and its controversial styling. It wasn’t yesterday, but with a model going on sale in 2018 for the 2019 model year, that wasn’t too long ago.
A light update with a significant interior update is now available for the 2022 model, and a prototype has recently been seen on the road.
The Pickup Truck Plus SUV Talk video above on YouTube shows the changes, despite the very heavy camouflage on both the front and rear for what should be a minor refresher. The redesigned LED headlights are believed to replace the current lenses, although the prototype here appears to have a replacement unit.
One of the criticisms of the current-generation Silverado is the small headlights with awkward cuts from the fenders that flow into the grille below. Maybe this design element can be dropped, or maybe the half-ton pickup will adopt the similar two-light setup seen on the larger Silverado HD.
The camouflage on the back is more of a mystery, except for the back door. A few days ago we reported on Chevrolet getting a hatchback version of the GMC MultiPro and possibly installed in the rear of this test vehicle.
As for the rest of the rigs, it is speculated that the refurbished truck could have an integrated ladder platform, which of course requires a sheet metal redesign.
Perhaps the biggest news is not something seen in this clip. Not long after the Silverado made its debut, news leaked that development picked up speed against the Ram 1500, which is also new for 2019. In short, the designer hasn’t finished the new interior and the old one has received an important facelift.
By 2022, we expect Silverado to have a significantly upgraded greenhouse. In fact, we reported in February that the reconditioned truck should have an interior similar to the new Suburban.
That makes sense: The Suburban and Silverado are made from the same fabric, and quite frankly, SUVs are a much better place for drivers and passengers to travel.
With these changes expected for the 2022 model year, official disclosures are likely months away. Spring 2022 is a great possibility, or it depends on global coronavirus cases, which could even extend into summer.
2022 Chevy Silverado 3500HD LTZ

2022 Chevy Silverado ZRX Redesign
And since this arrives a model year after the Silverado 2022 refresh, It will have a revised center stack in the interior, as well as clip/tuck to the front and rear fascia. Our ownership rendering above predicts what the truck will look like.
Unfortunately, like the Tahoe Z71 2022 and Suburban Z71, the Silverado ZR2 won’t offer the Duramax 3.0L LM2 diesel engine. This is due to packing constraints as it tapers the lower front fascia to increase the approach angle.
Under the hood, there will only be a gas engine, limited by a 6.2L L87 V8 engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission. That’s good enough for 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque.
The upcoming Silverado ZR2 was previewed at the 2019 SEMA Show, under the guise of the Chad Hall Racing truck. The upgraded Silverado 1500 features a DSSV damper, unique suspension, underbody coating, and all-terrain BFG tires.
However, the bodywork was not updated. Below is a video of Chad Hall himself speaking with Zane Merva of GM-Trucks from March 2020 hinting at the transfer of technology taking place from dirt to road:
Likewise, the existing T1 refresh for the Silverado and Sierra for the 2022 model year is now for 2022. Delays like these can be found throughout the General Motors lineup, and in other industries.
You may be wondering what happened to the name “ZRX” that has been around for the last year or so. In short, General Motors may have trademarked it, but it seems that the Chevrolet marketing team decided that the ZR2 nomenclature was fine. In this, they were right.
The ZRX doesn’t seem necessary, for two reasons. One is that the ZR2 has become known as the off-road mountain goat when it comes to the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 mid-sized truck.
The second is with the TRX 2022 Ram prepared by another team, the ‘ZRX’ is too close and too confusing. At least they learned from Bolt / Volt, right?
2022 Chevy Silverado 3500 High Country
Anyone looking for a heavy-duty work truck should use the Silverado HD for a test drive. With strong crane capacities and technology geared towards making hauling trailers simpler and safer, the Silverado is a four-wheeler workhorse.
While some of the rival pickup trucks are ultimately more polished in terms of ride comfort and cabin quality, the Silverado HD remains a great option in a very competitive class.

2022 Chevy Silverado 3500 HD
The 2022 Silverado HD, comprised of the Silverado 2500HD and Silverado 3500HD, is expected to experience minor changes to the model year, including:

2022 Chevy Silverado 3500 Diesel
With two heavy-duty powertrain options, innovative crane technology, and the large, functional Durabed, the Silverado HD is ready to go. And no matter the job, there are five unique trim levels ready to suit your needs.
- HIGHEST
Excellent diesel engine, large crane and payload capacity, impressive trailer assistance features. - LOWEST
The cab lacks rival HD quality, the steering feel is unconvincing, competitors have more active safety technologies. - DECISION
The Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD are heavy-duty trucks that look bold, move on mountains and understand trailer technology.
Heavy-duty pickup trucks are built to do work their half-ton truck cannot, and the Chevy Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD 2022 are no exception. While they share a nameplate with the smaller Silverado 1500, they themselves offer the Duramax V-8 with torque. 910 lb-ft and a maximum crane rating of 36,000 pounds.
The biggest Chevy trucks also pack several trailer assist technologies that help them compete with the Ford Super Duty and Ram HD lineups.
Despite the myriad of Silverado HD configurations, including a spacious crew cabin, even the most expensive version cannot match the luxury of the most luxurious Ford or Ram inland.
Even so, Chevy’s bodywork is arguably the boldest in its class, albeit less classy than its corporate cousin, the GMC Sierra HD. Combine that with incredible capabilities and desirable features and you’ll have the 2022 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD.
What’s New for 2022?
Along with new trailer towing technology and special editions, the Silverado HD 2022 now has a maximum crane rating higher than 36,000 pounds. Available only on the well-equipped Silverado 3500HD, Chevy said last year’s maximum rating boost of 500 pounds by updating the truck’s suspension hardware and wheel packaging.
Highlighting this new technology is the penknife warning that lives up to its name, a trailer length indicator that helps the driver change lanes when pulling something, and an improved cargo bed view that makes it easier to mount a fifth-wheel trailer.
The latest list of Silverado HD special editions includes the dark Midnight Edition, the Monochromatic Z71 Sport Edition, the luxurious Z71 Chrome Edition, and the Carhartt Special Edition.
The latter features an exaggerated Carhartt badge, an exclusive Mosaic Black paint with striped detail, two-tone black and Carhartt brown leather upholstery, and a soft tonneau finish.
Pricing
- Work Truck $ 36,595
- LT $ 40,695
- Custom $ 41,395
- 3500 LCF Gas $ 47,435
- 4500 LCF Gas $ 50,140
- LTZ $ 50,995
- High Country $ 64,095
We’ll choose the 2500HD with a crew cabin and standard cargo bed. We’ll also be adding Duramax all-wheel drive and refined diesel powertrain to the LT trim level.
We would recommend the Z71 Off-Road package (18-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, bedsheets, upgraded suspension, underbody protection) to increase styling and increase capability.
We will also select the Convenience package for its desired features. This includes a 10-way power driver seat, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, LED cargo bed lighting, heated steering wheel, remote start, and more.
Lastly, the Safety package makes the beast easier to live with thanks to blind-spot monitoring, rear traffic alerts, and front and rear parking sensors.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD feature a standard gas-powered 6.6-liter V-8 engine producing 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque and are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
The optional 6.6 liter V-8 Duramax diesel engine carries over from the previous generation. It continues to produce 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft but is now connected to an Allison 10-speed automatic. These engines are paired with rear or all-wheel drive, and each is compatible with single or dual rear axle axles.
We rode both powertrains over the mountains while pulling a few tonnes and were impressed by his abilities. The gas engine and six-speed automatic work well together to control the truck’s speed, which is especially important when towing up steep inclines.
However, the Duramax powertrain is a go-to for those who regularly pull heavy loads. Its great power and easy transmission response provide an extra level of confidence and safety when it comes to what this truck was made of – moving mountains.
However, the Silverado’s lack of steering accuracy and heavy-duty feedback – even when equipped with an electric-assist system – is less convincing. However, the big Chevy rides really well because of its impressive capabilities.
Towing and Payload Capacity
Heavy-duty trucks are rated by their maximum cranes and payload ratings, even though the large payloads are never really tested by most people. The gas-powered Silverado HD can pull up to 17,400 pounds, and the diesel version can pull up to 36,000 pounds.
Also, the strongest Silverado 3500HD with a regular cabin and dual rear axle can carry a payload of up to 7442 pounds.
Fuel Economy and MPG
Since the EPA did not test vehicles as heavy as the Silverado HD and its colossal competitors, we can only judge their real-world mpg on our 75 mph highway fuel-efficient route.
We tested the Silverado 2500HD on 6.6-liter V-8 petrol, and it did 14 mpg on the highway. In comparison, we tested the F-250 with a gas-powered 6.2-liter V-8 and six-speed automatic transmission, and it did 15 mpg in the same test.
The Silverado 2500HD diesel is capable of producing 19 mpg on the road, much like the Ram 2500 we last tested.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Pickup trucks have a wide spectrum of interior configurations and technologies available. Heavy-duty Silverado runs the gamut from stripped work trucks to dressed up crew cabs.
All of the mountainous dashboard features are packed with easy-to-use switchgear. The Chevy crew cab, short box setup has a longer wheelbase than the previous generation and provides more passenger space.
Although the luxurious model cannot match the material quality and sophistication of the Ram HD, the Silverado’s cabin and features still manage to handle the luxury of a truck.
The most desirable content includes a heated and ventilated front seat, heated rear seat, heated steering wheel, head-up display, and more. The Chevy is packed with copious interior cubby storage which is highlighted by the giant center console holder.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Each Silverado HD comes with a touchscreen that supports Chevy 3 Infotainment software, which includes the standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It features useful volume and tuning buttons as well as several physical buttons and voice commands that complete the touch-sensitive look.
A larger 8.0-inch touchscreen with a seven-speaker Bose audio system, additional power points, SiriusXM satellite radio, Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless charging is also available.
The infotainment system also allows users to save different trailer profiles to monitor maintenance and even control trailer functions via the smartphone app.
Safety Features and Driver Assistance
The Silverado HD 2022 has not been collision tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
However, each model is available with several driver-assisted technologies, and there is some trailer-specific assistance that makes towing easier.
There’s even a handy multiview camera system that includes a transparent mode which makes maneuvering in the parking lot and blending onto the highway easier when pulling by allowing the driver to see through the trailer virtually. Other key security features include:
- Available forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking
- Blind-spot monitoring and rear traffic alerts are available
- A departure path is available
- Warranty and Maintenance Protection
Chevy covers the Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD with competitive warranties that match competitors from Ford and Ram. Each heavy-duty Silverado also gets one free scheduled maintenance visit.
- The limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
- The Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
- Free treatment covered for the first visit

2022 Chevy Silverado 3500 Dually
One of the largest vehicles that General Motors sells, the Chevrolet Silverado HD range offers impressive capabilities to meet all your job needs. Available in gas or diesel variants, the Silverado 3500HD supports its divisive appearance with plenty of torque, and a variety of configurations from single and crew cabs to short and long bunk beds.
Like most heavy-duty trucks, the Silverado HD comes in a single or dual rear wheel configuration, which also defines the truck’s capabilities. In addition to the standard WT (Work Truck), there’s a Silverado 3500HD for every wish or need, including a glamorous High Country model featuring heated and ventilated front seats, dual-tone perforated leather seats, and plenty of chrome exterior accents.
Overview
- The maximum crane capacity with gooseneck has been increased to 36,000 pounds
- The WT and LT models are now offered with bed cameras
- The LT model gets an EZ Lift tailgate
- Some trims get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless compatibility
- Mosaic Black and Cherry Red Tintcoat have been added to the Silverado 3500HD exterior color palette

- The Z71 Chrome Sport Edition adds body-colored grille bars, chrome skidplates, spray-on sheets, 20-inch alloy wheels, and chrome auxiliary ladders (4 inches on the LT and 6 inches on the LTZ)
What We Think
You wouldn’t mistake the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD for anything else thanks to the new look that has been causing a stir since the truck arrived. Behind the new mug is a much better pick up but still has a few quibbles.
With the standard 6.6-liter V-8, the Silverado 3500HD has no problems climbing hills – provided you can get a six-speed automatic to work with. Even with the trailer loaded nearing its maximum capacity, the diesel engine and 10-speed automatic offer excellent torque thanks to a wider powerband and quicker response.
Things fail in terms of interior and ride quality. The available front seat seats are flat and too sturdy. The High Country models, on the other hand, feature a more supportive throne with better cushioning and side cushions.
The interior features a lot of substandard materials, especially on the cheaper models. Like most trucks of this size, the Silverado 3500HD sacrifices comfort – the truck provides a rigid ride regardless of whether the body is empty or full.
In short, get the Silverado 3500HD for its capability and diesel engine. Although Chevrolet has significantly improved it compared to previous models, it still lags behind its competitors in several factors.
Performance
The Silverado 3500HD is available with two engine options: the 6.6 liters V-8 gas with 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque or the 6.6-liter V-8 turbodiesel with 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. The gas engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and the diesel plant is coupled to a 10-speed unit.
Security
Blind-spot monitoring and rear traffic alerts are available in the basic WT class as part of the Safety package. Front collision warning and the front automatic emergency braking are part of the Safety Confidence package.
Both packages are part of the LTZ Premium and High Country Deluxe packages, which also add the following distance indicators, lane departure alerts, and automatic high-beam.
Towing and Payload
If equipped properly, the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD can pull up to 20,000 pounds on the standard hitch or 36,000 pounds on the gooseneck. However, it requires an option for a diesel engine and a dual rear wheel configuration in an RWD single cab truck.
In comparison, the Ram 3500HD is good for up to 14,970 pounds on a conventional hitch or up to 37,100 pounds with a gooseneck.
Total payload increased by 7,442 pounds with gas engines or 6,523 pounds with diesel plants. The 3500HD ram can carry up to 7,680 pounds when equipped with its standard gas engine or 6,840 pounds with an optional diesel engine.
Technology
Standard Chevrolet technology includes a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility (wireless on higher trims), a six-speaker audio system, and a 3.5-inch instrument cluster display.
The LT and higher models get a larger 8.0-inch touch screen. The top trim gets a 4.2-inch or 8.0-inch instrument cluster display, internal navigation, a head-up display, and a seven-speaker Bose audio system.
2022 Chevy Silverado ZRX Engine
Meanwhile, FCA is likely to take a simpler approach, and drop the beloved 392 Hemi V8 paired with an 8-speed TorqueFlite transmission into the more basic Ram 1500 TRX engine bay.
The 6.4L Apache V8 Hemi engine is traditionally good at 485 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. It is otherwise hybridized, as the FCA has hinted at future products.
The Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 2023 is based on the truck showcased at the 2019 SEMA Show. This concept is a full version of the Silverado LT Trail Boss featuring a 6.2 liter, V-8 engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Then it is equipped with long-travel suspension, front and rear shocks, high-capacity DSSV dampers, and 35-inch off-road tires. For now, things that could be featured on the production version of the Silverado ZR2 2023 include:
- Front and rear locking differential
- Improved off-road suspension
- Latest generation Multimatic DSSV silencer
- New front and rear bumper designs
- A better approach and departure angles
- Revised interior, especially the dashboard and center console layout
2022 Chevy Silverado ZRX Price and Release Date
The Silverado ZR2 program was forced to be offered to the 2023 model year due to COVID-19 delays, having originally targeted for 2022. That means the big ZR2 will hit the market in the calendar year 2022.
Pricing for the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 2023 is too early to determine, but as the Trailboss starts at a little over $ 50,000, we’re aiming for the truck to be at least under $ 60,000.
Considering what Ford and Ram are cooking to fill the space under their $ 70,000 + supercharged V8 truck as outlined above, this off-road Silverado is likely to be too much money.
There’s no way a half-ton truck enthusiast would be so forgiving of a drop-off pickup by segment. They also won’t be happy to realize that they will have a hard time turning it up on their own, thanks to Global B’s implementation of the electrical architecture.
GM. Chevrolet has to figure out how to create superior value with this upcoming track. Because if they don’t, they risk falling in a seemingly endless market for off-road horsepower and hardware.
The ace upfront could be a potential Silverado ZR2 Bison, as it has been hinted from Chevrolet marketing officials that it is seeking to do more business with the American Expedition Vehicle. But we’ll have to wait and see about that.
