The media cannot provide an official source for this statement; However, they confirmed that the production halt would be made two years ahead of schedule.

The year 2023 is expected to be a very important calendar year for Malibu as the mid-sized sedan is expected to receive a redesign. Initially, General Motors was expected to keep the Malibu until 2025. This will not happen again.

2024 Malibu Report

There was one standard sedan that did not meet the targets in General Motors’ North American restructuring plan: the Chevrolet Malibu.

It looks like the mid-size sedan will last for another five years. After that, the lights should go out for the model.

Automotive News (subscription required) reported Sunday in its “Future Product Pipeline” feature that old Chevrolet sedans will run out of fuel by 2024.

Malibu sales have continued to slump despite a refresh for the 2019 model year. The publication’s sources claim that the sedan will now last until at least 2024. At that point, production is expected to end.

Currently, the Malibu is built in Fairfax, Kansas. The factory is also building a Cadillac XT4 crossover, which will help cushion the pain of losing vehicles on the production line in the future.

That doesn’t include possible investments or new vehicles that could be built at the factory.

Interestingly, AN claims Malibu may have some sort of indirect successor. Malibu’s successor is said to be an electric vehicle.

GM has plans for 20 new electric cars by 2023, and this rumored electric successor fits into the company timeline. No further details about the electric vehicle were given in the report.

On the eve of the proposed demise, which we believe to be legitimate, the Malibu may get another refresh in 2022.

GM cut many passenger cars from its portfolio as part of its 2018 restructuring. So far, the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Volt, Cruze, and Impala have died and or will die soon.

Power, Riding Comfort, and Handling

The Malibu’s power comes from a 163-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. This model has the fewest horsepower in its class. The Malibu, like many others in the sector, employs an automatic transmission designed for fuel efficiency rather than increasing engine output.

As a result, it takes roughly 8.0 seconds to accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph. Acceleration isn’t a huge problem for most families who just want to get somewhere safely. The Malibu has enough power to propel it up a freeway entry ramp and into traffic. In comparison, the Camry with its 4-cylinder engine executes the 0-60 mph run roughly a second faster.

Nonetheless, the ride quality of the Malibu is comfortable, the handling is predictable, the cabin noise levels are reasonable, and if this was the final available vehicle on the rental car lot, we wouldn’t demand to see the manager.

Transmission

When Chevy dropped the Malibu’s top trim’s 250-horsepower turbo 4-cylinder engine in 2022, it announced that this midsize sedan no longer aspired to be a performance model. The remaining 1.5-liter 4-cylinder merely lacks the grit to compete with younger rivals.

However, as long as the driver has abandoned Saturday night drag racing on Main Street, the Malibu’s lackluster acceleration will go unnoticed. Despite its mid-pack torque delivery, the majority of Malibu’s sector competitors produce 30-to-40 more horsepower.
