The 2019 Chevy Traverse takes on a lazy family wagon idea and steers it toward the men’s clothing department. Last year, the traverse was raised inside and out and comes with a few new options for shoppers. Active safety features on more trims would do it through our scale and directly at families, but we deviate.

The Traverse was new last year and has borrowed much of its looks from Chevy’s truck division. It’s still beautiful, and in top trims can be dressed in leather, but it doesn’t step on the associated Buick Enclave’s premium look.

Under the hood, a 3.6-liter V-6, which makes 310bhp and returns about 22mpg combined, will be most common. A smooth, switchable 9-speed automatic is the only one on offer — thank God it’s one of the better ones.

Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available on most trimming, but it’s a part-time system that doesn’t —, you need to know when you need it. A 2.0-liter turbo-4 can have the front-wheel-drive Traverse RS under the bonnet. It’s no more efficient or powerful than the V-6, and this year Chevy added an AWD RS with the V-6 that is starting to push the Turbo-4 to “ch-so-ran ” status.

Travers is comfortable in all three places, even for adults. This kind of room on the way back is unusual in the class, but the sparse shoulder region is close to telling us that it is appropriate to find seven of our closest friends and choose from Dakota or South Dakota this weekend. Federal test experts have shown relatively good results, but the independent test experts have not yet collapsed.

Base L models will be seen as very rare. We want to start from the LT trim point with electric adjustable driver’s seat, second hooded chairs, leather-covered steering wheel, raised fabric seats, a 7.0-inch touchscreen and 18-inch wheels. Options are available for LTs, including leather upholstery, 20-inch wheels, 8.0-inch touchscreen, and blind spot monitors. There’s room to grow, that’s what we say.

The biggest change this year for the Traverse is a V-6 version of its RS issue, all but elbows off a 2.0-liter turbo 4 that was standard last year. Both engines are still available, although the 2.0-litre turbo-4 is now relegated to a trim, front-wheel drive only. The V-6 is a proven mill from GM that provides 310 hp and 266 lb-ft. Its only partner is a smooth switching automatic that works very well.

The V-6 makes the most of its power via a thick slice of the power band. We have enough spin to turn up the front wheels, enough to spill a milkshake if you’re interested in cleaning up the mess later. The 9-speed fire fires from rapid shifts and drops the gears well for the highway. It’s better than other 9 speeds we’ve tested, the right programming goes far.

Chevy’s part-time all-wheel drive is optional on all trim except high country. It’s a system that requires driver engagement, a head-scratcher when other automakers offer automatic systems. Turning a button from front-on all-wheel drives is really for efficiency’s sake, but at 22 mpg the traverse is hardly efficient without it.

A 2.0-liter turbo-4 is a link choice for the Traverse. Available only in front-wheel drive RS spec, it is no sportier, not more efficient and weighs heavily on the engine’s 257 horsepower. We report when we’ve had more time behind the wheel.

Like any other big family galoot, the traverse and pitches steer like a big family car. (It is.) It’s not particularly communicative, but a big on-center spot helps the traverse stay in the same direction on long journeys. The suspension was upgraded last year compared to previous generations. The Traverse uses supple MacPhersons up front and a five-link rear suspension to smother bumps.
