Exclusive! 2024 Chevy Blazer First-Ever All-Electric SUV Review

Posted on

2024 Chevy Blazer has been a shapeshifter since the nameplate first appeared in 1969. Originally a full-sized, two-door-based truck called the K5, the Blazers migrated to a smaller SUV body style based on the S-10 pickup in the mid-1980s.

Then came the mid-size TrailBlazer in the early 2000s, which gave birth to the LS V-8-powered SS model, before the Blazer title returned with a sharp crossover style in 2019.

Now Chevy is changing its name to an all-new electric SUV., which comes for the 2024 model year with a range of up to 320 miles and the revival of the SS badge on the 557-hp performance model.

The Blazer EV debuted with four trims—the 1LT, 2LT, RS, and SS—and a dizzying array of powertrain options. The 1LT, 2LT, and RS are front-wheel drive models as standard, with the 1LT capable of covering a distance of about 247 miles on a single charge.

All-wheel drive is optional on the 2LT and RS, and the 2LT is maxed out at a range of 293 miles depending on the size of the battery. The RS will also be available in a rear-wheel drive configuration, and with the right battery and drivetrain, the RS will be able to cover a distance of up to 320 miles.

The Blazer EV drives General Motors’ Ultium platform and three battery sizes will be offered, but Chevy has not revealed how big the package will be. Chevy says that when plugged into a DC fast charger, the Blazer EV will be able to charge up to 190 kW, adding 78 miles of range in 10 minutes.

  • The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV comes with an Ultium platform and features front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive.
  • The SS’s performance trim produces 557 horsepower and 648 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to reach 60 mph within four seconds, according to Chevy.
  • Chevy estimates the Blazer EV will be able to travel between 247 and 320 miles at a cost, and prices will start at $44,995, with the SS ringing at $65,995.

2024 Chevy Blazer Review

When Chevrolet brought back the Blazer as a two-line mid-size crossover in 2019, original fans who were expecting an SUV ready off-road were vocal with their disappointment. Now comes another surprise wearing the Blazer badge, as Chevy brings an SUV with a multilevel name to the realm of autodom electricity for 2024.

2024 Chevy Blazer

The gas-free version is called the Blazer EV, and if you’re disappointed with the Blazer’s electrification, take it easy. in the SS trim, which boasts 557 horsepower and is said to be capable of reaching 60 mph in less than four seconds.

While the SS appears to be tailor-made to deal with the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT and Tesla Model Y Performance, three other more affordable and less powerful models will also be available.

The Blazer EV uses General Motors’ Ultium battery technology, and the model with the most range is the RS trim, which Chevy says will cover about 320 miles on a single charge.

The Blazer EV will be the new model in the Blazer family, with its own different body and interior—it’s not a gas Blazer equipped with an EV propulsion system. It will be offered in four trims, with mid-range 2LT and RS models first on the market in the summer of 2023.

The top-spec SS trim will soon follow, going on sale before the end of 2023. The 1LT trim will join the lineup in early 2024.

2024 Chevy Blazer Electric

The new 2024 Chevrolet Blazer all-electric revealed Monday night will come in variations and price points designed to attract everyone from daily drivers to police, Chevrolet executives said.

General Motors will begin production of a midsize SUV next year. It will be the second new EV to enter Chevrolet’s lineup after the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, but will eventually fade to be replaced by a newer EV on GM’s Ultium propulsion system.

The Blazer EV is one of the new electric vehicles to come in the next few years. Earlier this year, GM introduced the 2024 Silverado EV light-duty pickup, which is expected to start at $39,900 when it comes to the market next year.

In September, GM will launch the Equinox EV SUV, which is expected to start at $30,000 when it comes to the market in the fall of 2023. GM said it would issue an electrified version of the Corvette next year.

2024 Chevy Blazer EV Motor, Power and Performance

Chevrolet has not yet released horsepower figures for the 1LT, 2LT, or RS models, but the top-range SS models will come exclusively with a 557-hp electric powertrain with standard all-wheel drive. That model, according to Chevy, will reach 60 mph in less than 4.0 seconds.

The 1LT is only available in front-wheel drive settings while the 2LT model can be owned with front-wheel drive or all. Surprisingly, rs models come as standard with front or rear-wheel drive—your choice—with optional all-wheel drive.

When more information is released on the available Blazer EV powertrain, we will update this story in detail.

2024 Chevy Blazer Interior

The centerpiece in the interior is a 17.7-inch touchscreen paired with an 11-inch digital measuring cluster. The dashboard design is sleek and futuristic with turbine-like air vents, and the RS and SS add a flat bottom steering wheel, ambient lighting, and plenty of red accents.

2024 Chevy Blazer

The RS and SS also get heated and ventilated front seats, while the standard heated rear seats on the SS can also be selected on the RS. We were amazed by the sharp design in our short sitting time in pre-production vehicles, but we found the headroom in the second row to be sorely lacking.

The Blazer EV is also equipped with technology, with standard automatic emergency braking, lane guard assistance, front foot pedestrian detection and braking, and optional reverse automatic braking and Advanced Park Assist.

GM’s Proprietary Super Cruise hands-free road driving system is also available, and the MyChevy app will allow owners to map out routes to find charging stations.

The Blazer EV is truly a two-line affair, and from the photos, we can see a sporty interior design motif that matches the aggressive exterior styling of the SUV.

Round air vents flank the dashboard, and on the RS and SS trims, Chevrolet has adopted a two-tone black-and-red color scheme—but we hope a more monotonous look is also available for those who don’t like flashes.

Although there was adequate legroom in both rows, we found less headroom when we had the opportunity to sit inside a pre-production SS model. When we get the chance, we will test the cargo capacity of the Blazer EV with our carry-on suitcase test and update this story with the results.

Here are some additional interior features:

  • Two-row layout and flat floor provide plenty of space and storage options
  • Standard ambient lighting with personalization function on RS and SS trims
  • Design cues and unique RS and SS trims
  • Blue and red contrast stitching on RS
  • Sueded microfiber seating in the SS, Adrenaline Red seating surfaces, and Argon Orange accents are available
  • The front seats are heated and ventilated in the RS and SS, along with the heated rear outboard seating position that is standard in the SS and available in the RS in addition
  • The heated steering wheel on RS and SS
  • Turbine-inspired sculptural vents

2024 Chevy Blazer Infotainment and Connectivity

All models come with a large 17.7-inch infotainment screen that is slightly tilted towards the driver and framed on the left and bottom by physical controls for the climate control system and volume knobs.

The 11.0-inch secondary display presents the driver with gauges and other driving info.

Chevrolet hasn’t said anything about the Blazer EV infotainment system, but we suspect it’s the latest from GM, which is based on Android Auto.

We expect to see many standard connectivity features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and onboard Wi-Fi hotspots.

Other cool features

Chevy also shared that the Blazer EV will be able to reach 11.5 kW on a Level 2 AC charger, and 190 kW on a DC fast charger – the equivalent of the mileage of about 78 miles in 10 minutes. Therefore, automakers do not specify which models can reach such cost rates.

We asked Chevy for clarification and were told that the charging specifications would be revealed at a later date. In the meantime, here are some other cool features to look forward to:

  • Full LED exterior lighting, with animated walk-up/walk-away choreography in RS and SS
  • Super Cruise hands-free driving technology available on compatible roads
  • ADAS features such as Reverse Automatic Braking and Advanced Park Assist
  • LT trim features a monochromatic look
  • The RS has a black grille and other black accents
  • The SS has a unique front grille and two-tone color scheme, including a black roof and A-pillars
  • Front lighting on the RS and SS relays the state of charge when the EV is plugged in
  • The tailgate can be opened hands-free when the key fob is recognized by sensors on the back
  • Start hands-free – the driver simply presses the brake pedal after closing the door

Despite being on the Ultium platform and part of GM’s Ultium Charge 360 network, Chevy did not mention the plug and charge capability on the Blazers in a press release. We asked GM to clarify and learn that the all-electric Blazer will actually have Plug and Charge capability.

2024 Chevy Blazer Police Pursuit

Chevy also said there will be a Police Pursuit Vehicle version of the Blazer EV. Using the SS as a base, the PPV will be equipped with the largest battery and will be offered in rear-wheel drive or dual-motor, with all-wheel drive specifications.

2024 Chevy Blazer

The PPV will also have SS-style Brembo front brakes and a redesigned interior to meet the needs of police officers.

The public first learned of the Chevy Blazer EV at the CES 2022 GM event. Although the all-electric Silverado was the main focus of that presentation, GM CEO Mary Barra completely left the Las Vegas crowd with the final surprise at the end.

That’s where we caught a glimpse of the Blazer’s Super Sport (SS) trim – the first performance trim of all EVS under Chevy’s marque, but that’s all we learned at the time. Last June, GM offered a stronger temptation than its Blazer EV, confirming that it will arrive as a 2024 model in Spring 2023.

According to a Tweet from CEO Mary Barra, the world will learn more on July 18. Well, here it is and as promised, GM has shared many interesting new details regarding the Blazer EV and all four upcoming trims. Here are three of them to get started.

The Chevy Blazer EV comes in four trims, plus a PPV for police

When we’ve covered the limited details of the Blazer EV in the past, we have specific questions relating to trim levels, ranges, whether it will be AWD, and of course, how much it will cost.

Well GM has answered all those questions and some in a press release coinciding with the public debut event held in Los Angeles tonight.

Let’s start with the trim itself. In addition to the SS variant that was originally ridiculed, the Blazer EV will come in three additional trims, each offering a different motor configuration, range, and interior design. All trims are built on the GM Ultium EV platform.

Although the SS is the only model that comes with all-wheel drive as standard, it is an option available in two of the other three trims. Here’s how they compare side by side (including prices).

Although we’ve learned more about the various trims of the Blazer EV, the SS remains the focus of GM’s latest release. With AWD standard drive, the Super Sports EV is estimated to produce 557 horsepower and 648 lb-ft of torque.

It also comes with a Wide Open Watts (WOW) mode, which is similar to the Watts to Freedom mode on the GMC Hummer EV. GM estimates the Blazer SS can run 0-60 mph in less than four seconds. Here are some other images including a head-up display (HUD)

2024 Chevy Blazer Driving

At the top of the range, the Blazer SS became the first electric Chevy to bear the Super Sport badge and pumped 557 horsepower and 648 pounds-feet of torque.

All-wheel drive is standard on the SS, and Chevy claims this crossover can reach 60 mph in less than four seconds in the sportiest drive mode — which bears the name that caught the attention of Wide Open Watts, or WOW.

The SS will be equipped with Brembo front brakes and, like all Blazer EVs, feature independent front and rear suspension. This sportiest model offers an approximate range of 290 miles.

Each trim level gets a unique front fascia, with the LT featuring an emptied body-color grille while the RS adds a black grille cut and a full-width LED light bar, along with a sporty side skirt. The SS got a more aggressive black mask with a strakes column under the headlights and also got a black roof.

The LT uses 19-inch wheels, while the RS is upgraded to a 21-inch unit and the SS features 22 inches. The LED light bars found on the RS and SS, which include the illuminated Chevy logo, play a sequence of lighting as the driver walks towards or away from the car, as well as displaying the charge level when the Blazer is plugged in.

New Chevy Blazer Range, Charging, and Battery Life

While Chevy hasn’t released much info on the size of the battery pack that will be available on the Blazer EV, we know that the RS model will boast the highest EPA-estimated driving range of its lineup at 320 miles.

2024 Chevy Blazer

The entry-level 1LT model is said to produce about 247 miles per charge while the 2LT and SS trims offer a claimed range of 293 and 290 miles, respectively.

The Blazer EV will be able to charge on a DC fast charger and Chevrolet says it can charge up to 190 kW and add about 78 miles of range in just 10 minutes.

The fuel economy rating for the Blazer EV has not yet been released and will likely not be until near the SUV’s sales date in the summer of 2023.

When we get a chance to test the Blazer EV ourselves, we’ll take it on our 75-mph highway fuel-efficient route and update this story with the test results and the observed driving distance. For more information on the Blazer EV’s fuel economy, visit the EPA website here.

2024 Chevy Blazer Color

The 2024 Chevy Blazer EV SS was unveiled earlier this week, bringing top-tier Super Sport performance to the Bow Tie brand’s first electric crossover. Now, Chevrolet has revealed the exterior color options available for the Blazer EV SS.

There are a total of eight exterior colors available, and each features a two-tone paint scheme with a contrasting black roof for a sportier look.

The 2024 Chevy Blazer EV SS is no stranger to its performance. It features “design and engineering developed to meet the legacy of the iconic Super Sport performance designation.”

Ultium Drive’s standard dual-motor AWD configuration will be capable of producing 557 horsepower and 648 pound-feet of torque, allowing the crossover to race from zero to 60 mph in less than four seconds with Wide Open Watts (WOW) mode enabled.

The driving distance of the Blazer EV SS from a full charge is estimated at 290 miles, thanks to the largest Ultium battery pack available.

It will also feature other performance components, including a sport-tuned chassis and Brembo front brakes.

The Chevy Blazer EV SS will feature 11.5 kW level 2 AC charging and standard DC public fast charging capability of up to 190 kW, capable of adding about 78 miles of range in 10 minutes, according to GM estimates.

Finding a charging station has become a little easier with the GM charging station finder, available through the MyChevy smartphone app, as well as the on-vehicle Ultium Charge 360 charging software.

The Chevy Blazer EV SS will launch in late 2023 with prices starting at around $65,995 excluding destination shipping costs. Chevrolet currently accepts reservations on its website. Production is expected to begin next year and will take place at GM Ramos Arizpe’s plant in Mexico.

2024 Chevy Blazer Production

The vehicle will begin production in the summer of 2023 with the trim being launched “in waves,” Houlihan said. The Blazer EV will be made alongside a gasoline version at the GM Ramos Arizpe Assembly plant in Mexico.

2024 Chevy Blazer

Bell said petrol versions of the Blazer, Silverado, and others will remain on the market and overlap with EV offerings because Chevrolet, as a major brand, offers both to meet a broad customer base.

GM has not confirmed whether other EV variants will roll onto assembly lines at the plant that currently makes an internal combustion version.

For example, GM will build the Silverado and GMC Sierra EV at Orion Assembly in Orion Township and Factory ZERO in Detroit and Hamtramck.

But GM makes internal combustion light-duty pickups at the Fort Wayne Assembly in Indiana and the Oshawa Assembly in Canada and no decision has yet been announced on what plant to build when GM switches to the electric vehicle lineup by 2035.

GM makes its heavy-duty full-size pickups at the Flint Assembly. Bell stopped saying where GM would make the electric heavy-duty pickup, saying Chevrolet hadn’t discussed it at this point.

Bell also declined to say where the electric Equinox will be assembled. Internal combustion equinoxes are made in Canada and Mexico.

“The goal by 2035 is that things will disappear from an internal combustion engine perspective and we plan to increase our capacity as best we can and leverage that capacity for EV space,”

Bell said a position to play in both camps and make those plants do what they do and have the ability to transition. At this point, he should play a little better.”

Chevy Blazer EV reservation and delivery schedule

We have already shared “how much”, but of course, your next question is, “when.” In closing, Chevy has shared the sales/production schedule for the Blazer EV as follows:

Early sales began in the summer of 2023 with 2LT ($47,595) and RS ($51,995) trims. SS ($65,995) will follow later in 2023, followed by 1LT ($44,995) and PPV in Q1 of 2024.

The electric Blazer will be built at GM’s production facility in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, where a combustion version of the Blazer is currently being produced. Ordering the Blazer EV is now available on the Chevy website.
